Normally, snoring is caused by a breathing problem. One of the causes of snoring is a weakening of the soft palate. There are mouth, tongue and throat exercises you can do, to strengthen and tighten it, so it won’t drop and put pressure on the breathing passages, which can cause you to snore.

Even worse than the danger of ruining your relationship because of snoring, is the danger of snoring leading to sleep apnea (sleep apnoea). This condition can reduce the amount of oxygen supplied to the brain, increasing your blood pressure, which can lead to a stroke, heart attack and even death.

Sleep apnea is a serious condition that means you actually stop breathing, sometimes many times during the night, while you are sleeping. At the end of this non-breathing period, you make a sudden, loud gasping sound as you suck air in to get some oxygen.

If you are waking up in the morning, feeling tired or drained after a whole night in bed, suspect sleep apnea. When you have, or suspect you have, sleep apnea, you must see a health professional to determine if there is a physical problem which can be treated.
